The Payor Perspective

The Journal of Medical Economics has published “The real-world economic impact of home-based video electroencephalography: the payer perspective,” an exciting new manuscript that concludes that video-EEG (VEEG) procedures were significantly less costly in an outpatient vs. inpatient cohort, and epilepsy-related healthcare costs were lower during the follow-up period of 12 months after the procedure. In the October 2019 issue, it was featured as the publication’s cover story.

Stratus was the driving force behind this study to assess and compare epilepsy-related healthcare resource utilization and economic outcomes among 14,000 patients who received VEEG in outpatient vs inpatient settings.

For patients and payers, outpatient monitoring offers an economically viable alternative to inpatient monitoring, when patient indications are non-urgent, with evidence that supports comparable diagnostic accuracy – more simply stated, outpatient VEEG is cheaper, faster, and delivers equivalent diagnostic value.1
